Space & setting.

Deep in the woods of an abandoned slate quarry, an inside-out cabin and futuristic stilted huts combine experimental architecture with wild glamping. Inspired by the shape of an old Cornish engine house, an ingenious system of rocks, pulleys and folding walls opens up the interior of the cabin to the large wooden deck and trees beyond. Sleeping is in bunkbeds, cooking is over the firepit and the hardy can can shower in a tumbling waterfall. In the treehouse-inspired huts, views of the surrounding woodland and Cornish coast are framed by large geometric windows, best enjoyed from the cosy mezzanine bed. Whichever you choose, everything is pared-back but beautifully designed; a true back-to-nature adventure.

The 43-acre site is off-grid, shared only with a handful of tented structures, plus 2 resident goats, Mississippi and Lincoln. There’s a lake for wild swimming, and a 10-minute walk through the forest leads to a communal area with the solar-powered showers and a rustic-chic kitchen. You can book a slot in a wood-fired hot tub or a ‘sound bath’ here (extra cost), plus there’s a brilliant pop-up restaurant on Saturday nights. Come to chill out with a group of friends, and roam the rugged Cornish landscape — trails lead right the way down to golden Trebarwith Strand beach.

Getting here: best to drive

Owner Louise’s goal was to bring inspiring architecture into new and exciting spaces, while educating about sustainability and ecology.

My Kip favourites

She loves
“Lighting a fire and watching the sun set behind Gull Rock down the valley.”

We loved
Waking up to the sound of the stream beneath the cabin, then lighting a fire and taking a morning coffee out onto the deck.

Sustainability.

Top marks. The entire site is off-grid, powered by solar energy and a natural water supply. All structures have been designed as temporary installations, to reduce the impact on the natural environment, and this ensures the site teems with birds, animals and interesting plants. They use eco-cleaning products and encourage full recycling.

Surrounds.

  • Cornish Eco Escape Lucy Laucht Photography1
  • Go for an early morning swim in the lake; plunging into the fresh cold water will invigorate your soul.
  • Campfire cooking is part of the experience, but there are a couple of gastro pubs within walking distance, if you can’t take the pace! The Port William at Trebarwith Strand has amazing sunset views, while The Mill House is hidden in its own wooded valley and often has local live bands.
  • Walk the South West Coastal Path: the cliff-top stretches between Tintagel and Boscastle and Tintagel to Port Isaac are stunning.
  • Taste award-winning wines at the Camel Valley and Trevibban Mill vineyards, a short drive away.
  • St Nectans Glen is fairytale-esque: a 60ft waterfall and a ruined hermitage in a secret glen reputedly inhabited by pixies (!). There’s also a cafe serving Cornish cream teas. Jam first, here.
  • Take a surfing lesson at Polzeath. When the tide and wind conditions are right, Trebarwith Strand, Tregardock and Lundy Bay also have decent breaks.
